Murshidabad.
The last capital of independent Bengal before British rule was named after Nawab Murshid Quli Khan, the dewan of Bengal, Bihar & Odisa. Originally called Makhsudabad, it was founded by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. In 1704 it was renamed Murshidabad. It continues to be a place of historic interest and a seat of the Nawabi culture of Bengal.
The city of Murshidabad offers a feel of royalty and rich Nawabi culture in its monuments and palaces.
Hazar Duari-
The most popular site of Murshidabad, Hazar Duari or the palace of thousand door was constructed by Duncan Macleod in 1837 on the orders of Sayyid Mubarak Ali Khan II. Built in Italian architectural style the palace has 1000 doors-900 real & 100 fake. Now converted into a Museum the Hazar Duari palace is regarded as the biggest site museum of Archaeological survey of India. Of 20 displayed galleries containing 4742 antiquities, the museum contains various weapons, oil paintings of Dutch French and Italian artist, marble statue rare books old maps and manuscripts mostly belonging to 18th and 19th century.
Bara Imambara-
Built 1847 by Nawab Nazim Mansoor Ali Khan Feradun Jah, Bara Imambara is situated just opposite Hazar Duari palace on the bank of the river Bhagirathi. It is a congregation hall for Shia commemoration ceremonies especially those associated with the remembrance of Muharram.
Katra Masjid-
The most important think to note for Katra Masjid,2000 people could offer prayer in this Mosque at the same time. It was built by Nawab Murshid Quli Khan in 1723AD. Many of the building collapsed in the earth quake of 1897.
Motijhil-
One of the attractions of Murshidabad is Motijheel, a beautiful horseshoe shaped lake excavated by Nawazesh Muhammed, the husband of the famous Ghasseti Begum.
Nashipur Palace and Laxminarayan Mandir-
Built by king Kirti Chand Bahadur in 1865. Nashipur palace is a spot for tourist attraction. The Ramchandra temple and the Laxminarayan temple are situated inside the palace compound.
Kathgola-
Kathgola palace garden of Raja Dhanpat Singh Dugar & Laxmipat Singh Dugar was built by Harreck Chand in 1873.
Hirajhil- Built by the last Independent Nawab of Bengal Sirazdullah.
Kiriteswari Temple- This temple is one part of 51 holi pith as per Hindu mythology. The temple was built by King Darpanarayan.
